My creative practice examines joy!
Exploring what joy is, how it makes us feel and what triggers it within us. Capturing the sensation and pausing it, allowing it to be examined closer.
I explore a range of spaces; social, physical, architectural and emotional, to document these moments of pleasure, re-appropriating my findings through drawing, painting, printmaking and collage to generate an abstracted visual representation of joy.
The collecting, constructing and displaying of the work aims to invigorate the immediate space with an intensely positive feeling for the viewer both visually and physically through the playful use of colour, shape, pattern, form and texture. Hopefully an experience that will encourage us to think more about joy; what makes us feel that way, what sensations do we experience, are we actively seeking it out, how can we incorporate more of it into our lives?
A need for this type of elation feels ever more prevalent in our current socio-political and economic climate. I have learned through my own personal experiences that joy doesn’t erase the challenges of life or distract us from them but, by harnessing small pockets of delight, it can lift us, briefly and beautifully so that we can continue.
Next time you feel joy, pay attention to what made you feel it, what did it look like, sound like, feel like?
Ask other people what makes them joyful…
